Imukyky is a Finnish noun that denotes the ability to absorb or take up substances. It describes a material’s capacity to absorb liquids or moisture, as well as a living organism’s capacity to absorb nutrients, and also a person’s capacity to absorb information or ideas. The term is used across disciplines such as materials science, textiles, soil science, medicine, and education to express the extent to which a substance or system can assimilate inputs.

In materials science and textiles, imukyky refers to how much moisture or liquid a material can uptake, often measured by the increase in mass after immersion. In soils, it relates to water absorption and retention properties. In physiology and pharmacology, it denotes the body’s or an organ’s ability to absorb nutrients, medicines, or other substances from the digestive tract or from formulations; in cognitive or educational contexts it can be used metaphorically to describe how readily a person absorbs information.

The genitive form imukyvyn is used to indicate possession or association, as in imukyvyn mittaus (“the measurement of absorbency”) or imukyvyn vaihtelu (“variation in absorptive capacity”). The term is technical and most common in scientific or technical writing.
