An implosion is a process in which an object collapses or crushes inward. This typically occurs when the external pressure on the object significantly exceeds the internal pressure. The force of the surrounding environment then overcomes the object's structural integrity, causing it to rapidly and violently crumple or disintegrate inwards.

Common examples of implosion can be seen in various phenomena. For instance, a submarine hull under extreme water pressure can implode if it exceeds its operational depth limits. The immense weight of the water above crushes the vessel inwards. Similarly, vacuum tubes, which are sealed glass enclosures with a partial vacuum inside, can implode if their glass casing is compromised or subjected to sudden, strong external force. The atmospheric pressure outside the tube is then greater than the pressure inside, causing the glass to shatter inwards.

Another context where implosion is relevant is in the field of astrophysics, specifically concerning stars. When a massive star exhausts its nuclear fuel, it can no longer counteract the inward pull of its own gravity. This leads to a catastrophic gravitational collapse, resulting in a supernova explosion, and in some cases, the formation of a black hole or neutron star, which are remnants of the stellar core's implosion. The term "implode" is therefore used to describe a collapse driven by external forces or a lack of internal resistance.
