Impedancia, often referred to as impedance, is a fundamental concept in electrical engineering and physics that quantifies the opposition a circuit presents to alternating current (AC). It is the complex-valued generalization of electrical resistance, encompassing not only the resistive components of a circuit but also the reactive components arising from inductors and capacitors. Resistance is a measure of how much a material impedes the flow of direct current (DC), dissipating energy as heat. Impedance, however, accounts for the effects of these reactive elements which store and release energy, leading to phase shifts between voltage and current.

The unit of impedance is the ohm (Ω), the same as for resistance. Impedance is represented by a complex number, typically denoted by Z. The real part of Z represents the resistance (R), while the imaginary part represents the reactance (X), which is further divided into inductive reactance (XL) and capacitive reactance (XC). Inductive reactance increases with frequency, while capacitive reactance decreases with frequency. The magnitude of impedance, |Z|, determines the overall opposition to current flow, and the phase angle, φ, indicates the phase difference between the voltage across the component and the current flowing through it. Understanding impedance is crucial for analyzing AC circuits, designing filters, matching impedances for maximum power transfer, and understanding wave propagation.
