Immunosuppression refers to a condition or process where the immune system's ability to fight infectious disease is weakened or entirely suppressed. This can be intentional, such as in the case of organ transplantation where immunosuppressant drugs are used to prevent the body from rejecting the new organ, or it can be a consequence of other medical conditions or treatments.

The immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to defend the body against pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and fungi. When this system is suppressed, the body becomes more vulnerable to infections that a healthy immune system would normally be able to fight off. Opportunistic infections, which are caused by microorganisms that don't typically cause disease in healthy individuals, are a common concern for immunosuppressed people.

Intentional immunosuppression is a cornerstone of modern medicine. It is crucial for the success of organ and bone marrow transplants, as it prevents the recipient's immune system from recognizing the transplanted tissue as foreign and attacking it. Certain autoimmune diseases, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues, are also treated with immunosuppressive medications.

However, immunosuppression can also occur unintentionally. Conditions like HIV/AIDS directly attack and destroy immune cells, leading to severe immunosuppression. Certain cancers, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and prolonged use of corticosteroids can also impair immune function. Maintaining hygiene, avoiding crowded places, and ensuring vaccinations are up-to-date are important measures for individuals with compromised immune systems.
