Imation Corporation was an American company that manufactured and marketed data storage products, as well as audio and video recording media. Founded in 1984 as a spin-off from 3M, Imation initially focused on magnetic tape and floppy disk technology. Over the years, the company diversified its product line to include CD-ROMs, CD-Rs, DVD-Rs, and various flash memory devices such as USB drives and memory cards. Imation also ventured into digital audio players and portable hard drives.

The company experienced periods of significant growth, particularly during the peak demand for optical media and removable storage. However, like many companies in the data storage sector, Imation faced increasing challenges due to the rapid evolution of technology and the shift towards cloud storage and solid-state drives. Competition intensified, and the market for traditional media like CDs and DVDs declined.

In its later years, Imation underwent strategic changes, including acquisitions and divestitures, attempting to adapt to the changing market landscape. The company aimed to shift its focus towards more specialized storage solutions and digital content management. In 2015, Imation announced its intention to spin off its data storage and security business into a new, publicly traded company called Iron Mountain. The remaining Imation entity continued its operations with a focus on different product areas. Imation eventually ceased to exist as an independent entity after further corporate restructuring and acquisitions by other companies within the tech industry.
