Imamship refers to the concept of leadership within Islam. The term "imam" (meaning leader or model) can have various interpretations depending on the Islamic branch and context.

In Sunni Islam, an imam is primarily the prayer leader in a mosque, and by extension, a respected scholar or community leader. The concept of a divinely appointed, infallible imam is generally not accepted.

In Shia Islam, imamship holds a central and distinct theological significance. Shia Muslims believe that after the Prophet Muhammad, leadership of the Muslim community was divinely entrusted to a line of twelve Imams, beginning with Ali ibn Abi Talib. These Imams are considered to be infallible, divinely guided, and the authoritative interpreters of the Quran and Sunnah. The twelfth Imam, Muhammad al-Mahdi, is believed to be in occultation and will reappear at the end of times. The specific number and lineage of Imams can vary among different Shia sub-sects.

The role of an imam encompasses spiritual, moral, and sometimes political leadership. They are seen as exemplars of Islamic conduct and are responsible for guiding their communities in religious matters and upholding Islamic principles. The understanding and practice of imamship are fundamental to the theological and practical differences between Sunni and Shia Islam.
