Ilmastohistoria, or paleoclimatology, is the scientific study of past climates. It seeks to understand Earth's climate system over geological timescales, examining how and why climate has changed throughout history. This field relies on a variety of natural archives, known as proxies, to reconstruct past climate conditions. These proxies include ice cores, which contain trapped air bubbles and isotopic signatures that reveal atmospheric composition and temperature over hundreds of thousands of years. Tree rings provide annual records of temperature and precipitation. Sediments from ocean floors and lakebeds contain fossilized organisms and chemical traces that indicate past sea levels, temperatures, and oceanic conditions. Corals also record seasonal variations in temperature and water chemistry.

By analyzing these proxies, climatologists can identify natural climate variability, such as ice ages and interglacial periods, as well as the drivers behind these changes, including variations in Earth's orbit (Milankovitch cycles), volcanic eruptions, and solar activity. Understanding past climate shifts is crucial for contextualizing current climate change. It allows scientists to distinguish between natural climate fluctuations and those caused by human activities, such as the emission of greenhouse gases. This knowledge helps in developing more accurate climate models and predicting future climate scenarios, providing valuable insights for adaptation and mitigation strategies.
