This other medium can be another air stream, a liquid, or even a refrigerant. The fundamental principle of operation involves bringing the two media into close thermal contact, typically through a series of fins or plates, to facilitate heat exchange without direct mixing of the fluids.

There are several common types of air heat exchangers. Plate heat exchangers, often used in HVAC systems, consist of stacked plates that create alternating channels for the two fluids. Finned tube heat exchangers are prevalent where one fluid flows through tubes and the other across fins attached to the tubes, increasing the surface area for heat transfer. Rotary heat exchangers, also known as heat wheels, use a rotating matrix that absorbs heat from one air stream and releases it to another, commonly employed for energy recovery in ventilation systems.
