The iliotibial band, often referred to as the IT band, is a thick, fibrous band of connective tissue that runs along the outside of the thigh. It originates from the iliac crest, a bony prominence in the pelvis, and extends down the lateral side of the leg, attaching to the tibia, the larger bone in the lower leg, just below the knee. The IT band is composed primarily of collagen and functions to stabilize the knee and hip joints during locomotion.
