Ikonográfia is the study and interpretation of visual images and symbols. The term "iconography" itself comes from the Greek words "eikon" (image) and "graphein" (to write). Essentially, it is the "writing" or explanation of images. For example, the depiction of a dove might be interpreted as a symbol of peace or the Holy Spirit, depending on the context. Similarly, the presence of a specific flower or animal can carry a symbolic meaning that is understood within a particular cultural or religious framework.

The practice of iconography often involves comparing different representations of the same subject across various artworks to discern patterns and evolving meanings.
