Iconografisch is a Dutch term used to describe matters related to iconography, the study of visual imagery and its symbolic meanings in art, religion, and culture. In art history and related fields, iconografisch work involves identifying subjects, motifs, and symbols in images, such as saints, biblical scenes, allegorical figures, or narrative cycles, and noting their conventional meanings within a given tradition.

The word derives from eikon (image) and graphein (to write) and enters scholarly usage through Western intellectual traditions of art analysis. In Dutch discourse, iconografisch analysis often serves as the descriptive or cataloging stage of image study, preceding deeper interpretation. This distinguishes it from iconologisch or iconology, which emphasizes context, function, and interpretation within historical and cultural frameworks—an approach popularized by scholars such as Erwin Panofsky.

Methodologically, iconografisch work typically proceeds in stages: first documenting what is depicted (characters, actions, symbols); second noting recognizable iconographic programs or cycles; and third situating these elements within familiar religious, literary, or cultural correspondences. The aim is to clarify meaning by reference to established iconographies, while remaining open to variation across artists, regions, and periods.

Applications of iconografisch analysis span medieval and Renaissance art, manuscript illumination, sculpture, and archaeological imagery. It supports questions about patronage, function, and audience reception and provides a foundation for broader interpretive studies in iconology and visual culture. Limitations include potential overreliance on conventional readings, regional differences in symbol use, and the need to corroborate imagery with textual or material evidence.
