Höfuðborgarsvæðið, which translates to "Capital Region," is the metropolitan area surrounding Reykjavík, the capital city of Iceland. It is the most populous region in the country, encompassing Reykjavík itself and six other municipalities. These municipalities include Kópavogur, Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær, Mosfellsbær, Seltjarnarnes, and Kjósarhreppur. The region covers approximately 1% of Iceland's total land area but is home to over 60% of its population.

The Höfuðborgarsvæðið functions as the economic, political, and cultural center of Iceland. Reykjavík, as the capital, hosts government institutions, major businesses, educational facilities, and a vibrant arts scene. The surrounding municipalities are largely residential and commuter towns, interconnected by a well-developed road network.
