Hepatopathy is a broad medical term used to describe any disease or damage affecting the liver. The liver is a vital organ responsible for numerous functions, including detoxification, protein synthesis, and the production of biochemicals necessary for digestion. When the liver is affected by disease, these functions can be impaired, leading to a range of symptoms and health problems.

There are many causes of hepatopathy, which can be broadly categorized. Infectious causes include viral hepatitis (types A, B, C, D, and E), as well as other infections that can spread to the liver. Toxic hepatopathies result from exposure to certain medications, alcohol, or environmental toxins that damage liver cells. Metabolic diseases, such as hemochromatosis (iron overload) and Wilson's disease (copper overload), can also lead to liver damage. Autoimmune hepatopathies occur when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks liver cells. Genetic factors can also predispose individuals to certain liver conditions. Furthermore, conditions that obstruct bile flow, like gallstones or tumors, can cause liver damage.

Symptoms of hepatopathy vary widely depending on the underlying cause and severity. Early stages may be asymptomatic. As the disease progresses, individuals might experience fatigue, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), abdominal pain, swelling in the abdomen or legs, nausea, and changes in stool or urine color. Liver damage can range from mild inflammation (hepatitis) to severe scarring (cirrhosis) and liver failure. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to assess liver function, imaging techniques like ultrasound or CT scans, and sometimes a liver biopsy for definitive diagnosis and staging. Treatment strategies are tailored to the specific cause and aim to manage symptoms, slow disease progression, and prevent complications.
