Hysteresiskäyrillä, often translated as hysteresis loops, are graphical representations used in various scientific fields to depict the relationship between two variables where the path taken during an increase in one variable is different from the path taken during its decrease. This phenomenon, known as hysteresis, implies that the state of a system depends not only on the current input but also on its past history.

In magnetism, a hysteresis loop illustrates the magnetization of a ferromagnetic material as an external magnetic field is applied and then removed. The loop shows that even when the external field is zero, the material retains some magnetization (remanence), and a reverse field (coercivity) is required to demagnetize it completely. This behavior is crucial in the design of permanent magnets and magnetic storage devices.

Hysteresis loops are also observed in other areas, such as the stress-strain relationship in some polymers and elastomers, where the material may not return to its original shape or energy state after deformation. In electronics, the behavior of some components like inductors or transistors can exhibit hysteresis, affecting their response to changing input signals. The area enclosed by the hysteresis loop often represents energy loss within the system, which can be a desirable or undesirable characteristic depending on the application.
