Hypoperfusion is a medical condition characterized by inadequate blood flow to a tissue or organ. This reduced circulation means that cells and tissues do not receive sufficient oxygen and nutrients, which can lead to impaired function and, if prolonged or severe, cell death. Hypoperfusion can affect various parts of the body, including the brain, heart, kidneys, and extremities.

The causes of hypoperfusion are diverse and can stem from issues with the circulatory system itself, such as heart failure, severe blood loss (hemorrhage), or a blockage in blood vessels (ischemia). It can also be a consequence of systemic conditions like sepsis, where widespread inflammation causes blood vessels to dilate and leak, leading to a drop in blood pressure. Dehydration and severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) can also result in hypoperfusion.

Symptoms of hypoperfusion vary depending on the affected area. General signs can include confusion, lethargy, rapid heartbeat, and cold or clammy skin. Specific organ involvement may manifest as chest pain (heart), shortness of breath, or decreased urine output (kidneys).

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, blood tests to assess organ function and oxygen levels, and imaging studies to evaluate blood flow and identify any blockages. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause and restoring adequate blood flow. This may involve administering fluids, blood transfusions, medications to improve heart function or blood pressure, or surgical interventions to clear blockages. Prompt recognition and treatment are crucial to prevent permanent organ damage.
