Hypomania is a distinct period of elevated or irritable mood and increased energy or activity, lasting at least four consecutive days. It is considered a less severe form of mania, a key symptom of bipolar disorder. During hypomanic episodes, individuals may experience a noticeable change in their functioning that is uncharacteristic of their usual self. Symptoms can include inflated self-esteem or grandiosity, a decreased need for sleep, being more talkative than usual or pressure to keep talking, racing thoughts or a subjective experience that thoughts are flying, distractibility, and an increase in goal-directed activity or psychomotor agitation.
