hypogastricus
The hypogastricus refers to the region of the abdomen located below the umbilical region. This anatomical area is also known as the suprapubic region or the lower central abdomen. It is bordered superiorly by the umbilical region, laterally by the iliac regions, and inferiorly by the pubic bone. Anatomically, the hypogastric region contains several important structures. These include the lower part of the small intestine, the colon (specifically the sigmoid colon), the rectum, the urinary bladder, and the internal reproductive organs. In females, this includes the uterus and ovaries, while in males, it includes the seminal vesicles and prostate gland. The hypogastric region is also associated with the hypogastric nerves, which are part of the sympathetic nervous system. Pain or discomfort in the hypogastric region can indicate a variety of medical conditions affecting these organs, such as bladder infections, appendicitis (though typically starting in the umbilical region and migrating to the right lower quadrant), intestinal issues, or gynecological problems. Clinical examination of this area is crucial for diagnosis and treatment.
