The hypofyseområdet, often translated as the pituitary region, refers to the anatomical area in the brain that encompasses the pituitary gland and its surrounding structures. This region is located at the base of the brain, inferior to the hypothalamus and within a bony cavity called the sella turcica, a part of the sphenoid bone. The pituitary gland itself is a small, pea-sized endocrine gland that plays a crucial role in regulating numerous bodily functions by secreting hormones.

Key structures within the hypofyseområdet include the anterior pituitary (adenohypophysis) and the posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis), which are distinct in their development and function. The anterior pituitary produces and releases hormones like growth hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, and prolactin. The posterior pituitary, connected to the hypothalamus via the pituitary stalk, releases antidiuretic hormone (vasopressin) and oxytocin, which are synthesized in the hypothalamus.

The hypofyseområdet is also bordered by important neural pathways and blood vessels. The optic chiasm, where the optic nerves partially cross, is situated superiorly, making this region susceptible to visual disturbances when tumors or other masses occur. The cavernous sinuses, containing cranial nerves and the internal carotid arteries, lie laterally. Pathologies affecting the hypofyseområdet, such as pituitary adenomas, craniopharyngiomas, and other tumors, can lead to hormonal imbalances (hypopituitarism or hyperpituitarism) and neurological deficits due to compression of adjacent structures.
