Hypophysale, also known as the pituitary gland, is a small, pea-sized endocrine gland located at the base of the brain, specifically within the sella turcica, a bony structure. It is a critical component of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, a complex system that regulates various physiological processes. The pituitary gland is divided into two distinct regions: the anterior pituitary and the posterior pituitary.

The anterior pituitary, also known as the adenohypophysis, produces and secretes several hormones, including growth hormone (GH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH). These hormones play essential roles in growth, metabolism, reproduction, and stress response.

The posterior pituitary, or neurohypophysis, stores and releases two hormones: oxytocin and vasopressin. Oxytocin is involved in social bonding, childbirth, and lactation, while vasopressin regulates water balance and blood pressure.

The pituitary gland is controlled by the hypothalamus, which sends releasing and inhibiting hormones to the pituitary gland, regulating its hormone secretion. Dysfunction of the pituitary gland can lead to various disorders, including pituitary tumors, hypopituitarism, and hyperpituitarism.

The pituitary gland is connected to the hypothalamus by the infundibulum, a stalk-like structure that contains blood vessels and nerves. This connection allows for the transmission of signals between the two glands, enabling the hypothalamic-pituitary axis to function effectively.
