Hyperthyreosis is a medical condition where the thyroid gland produces an excessive amount of thyroid hormones. These hormones, primarily thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), regulate metabolism, affecting heart rate, body temperature, and energy levels. When there's too much, the body's functions speed up, leading to a hyperactive state.

The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves' disease, an autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, causing it to enlarge and overproduce hormones. Other causes can include toxic nodules, where lumps in the thyroid produce excess hormones independently, or thyroiditis, which is inflammation of the thyroid gland that can temporarily cause hormone leakage.

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism can vary but often include unexplained weight loss, rapid or irregular heartbeat, anxiety, tremors, increased sweating, heat intolerance, and changes in bowel patterns. In some cases, individuals may experience eye problems, known as Graves' ophthalmopathy, characterized by bulging eyes. Diagnosis is typically made through blood tests measuring thyroid hormone levels and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).

Treatment aims to reduce the production of thyroid hormones or block their effects. Options include antithyroid medications that inhibit hormone synthesis, radioactive iodine therapy which destroys overactive thyroid cells, and in some instances, surgery to remove part or all of the thyroid gland. The choice of treatment depends on the underlying cause, severity of the condition, and individual patient factors.
