Hypereutectic is a term used in materials science, particularly in metallurgy and phase diagrams, to describe a composition that lies beyond the eutectic point in a binary or higher-order alloy system. A eutectic point represents the lowest melting point of a mixture of two or more components, where the mixture melts or solidifies as a single phase at a constant temperature. Alloys with compositions to one side of the eutectic point are described as hypoeutectic, while those to the other side are termed hypereutectic.

In a binary system, a hypereutectic composition means that the proportion of one of the components is greater than that present at the eutectic point. When a hypereutectic alloy is cooled from a molten state, the first phase to solidify is the component in excess of the eutectic composition. As cooling continues, the remaining liquid becomes progressively enriched in the other component until it reaches the eutectic composition. At this point, the remaining liquid solidifies simultaneously into a mixture of the two components, forming the characteristic eutectic microstructure.

This behavior is critical for understanding the solidification process and the resulting microstructure of alloys. The presence and distribution of the primary solidifying phase and the subsequent eutectic phase significantly influence the mechanical and physical properties of the material, such as strength, hardness, and ductility. Therefore, controlling the composition relative to the eutectic point is a key aspect of alloy design and processing.
