hylkeiden
Hylkeiden, also known as Hylkeides, is a genus of small to medium-sized birds of prey in the family Accipitridae. The genus is native to the Americas and includes two species: the Crested Caracara (Caracara cheriway) and the Black Caracara (Daptrius ater). Hylkeiden species are characterized by their distinctive crests, which are used for display and communication. They are known for their agile flight and their ability to hunt a variety of prey, including small mammals, birds, and reptiles. Hylkeiden are typically found in open habitats such as grasslands, savannas, and scrublands. They are generally solitary birds, except during the breeding season. The breeding season varies by species, but typically occurs during the dry season. Hylkeiden lay clutches of 2-3 eggs, which are incubated by both parents. The chicks are fed by both parents and fledge after about 40 days. Hylkeiden are currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, but their populations are threatened by habitat loss and hunting. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these birds and their habitats.
