A hygrometer is an instrument used for measuring the amount of water vapor in the air, soil, or in confined spaces. The term hygrometer comes from the Greek words "hygros" meaning wet and "metron" meaning measure. These devices are crucial for a variety of applications, including meteorology, agriculture, industrial processes, and even in homes for comfort and preservation of sensitive materials.

There are several types of hygrometers, each utilizing different principles to measure humidity. Mechanical hygrometers often use organic materials like hair or synthetic fibers that change length in response to humidity. As humidity increases, these materials expand, and as it decreases, they contract, moving a needle on a dial. Electronic hygrometers are more common today and typically use sensors made of materials whose electrical resistance or capacitance changes with humidity. These changes are then converted into a humidity reading, often displayed digitally. Other types include chilled mirror hygrometers, which measure the dew point, and psychrometers, which use the difference in temperature between a dry bulb and a wet bulb thermometer to determine humidity.
