Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil, using mineral nutrient solutions in an aqueous solvent. Plants are often grown in an inert medium such as perlite, vermiculite, rockwool, or expanded clay pebbles, or in a water culture system where the roots are suspended directly in the nutrient solution. This method allows for precise control over nutrient delivery and plant growth conditions.

There are several common hydroponic systems. Deep Water Culture (DWC) involves suspending plant roots directly in a reservoir of nutrient-rich water. Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) uses a shallow stream of nutrient solution that flows over the roots in a channel. Drip systems deliver nutrient solution to the base of each plant, and ebb and flow systems periodically flood the growing medium with nutrient solution before draining it away. Aeroponics is a variation where roots are misted with nutrient solution.

Hydroponic systems can offer several advantages over traditional soil-based agriculture. They can lead to faster plant growth and higher yields because nutrients are readily available to the plant roots. Water usage can also be significantly reduced, as water is recirculated and not lost to runoff or deep percolation. Additionally, hydroponics can be implemented in areas with poor soil quality or limited space, and it can reduce the need for pesticides and herbicides because the controlled environment minimizes pest and disease entry. Common crops grown hydroponically include lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, and strawberries.
