A hydroseparator is a device used in various industrial and water treatment processes to separate solids from liquids based on density differences. It operates on the principle of gravitational settling, where denser particles descend through a fluid, while lighter particles or the fluid itself remain suspended or rise.

The fundamental design of a hydroseparator typically involves a chamber where the slurry or mixture enters. Within this chamber, the flow is slowed down, allowing gravitational forces to act effectively. Heavier solid particles, being denser than the surrounding liquid, settle towards the bottom of the chamber, forming a sludge layer. Lighter materials or the clarified liquid can then be withdrawn from the upper portion of the hydroseparator.

Hydroseparators are commonly employed in applications such as mining and mineral processing to recover valuable heavy minerals from ore slurries. In wastewater treatment, they can be used as a preliminary step to remove larger, heavier suspended solids before further purification.
