Fonts.googleapis.com is the domain used by Google Fonts to serve the CSS stylesheet required to load web fonts on a site. The endpoint is part of the Google Fonts API. When requested, it returns a CSS stylesheet containing @font-face rules that reference font files hosted on fonts.gstatic.com.

Typical usage involves adding a link element in the HTML head that points to fonts.googleapis.com. The current recommended entrypoint uses the CSS2 API, for example: https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Roboto:wght@400;700&display=swap. The older CSS API uses parameters such as family and display, e.g. https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Roboto:400,700&display=swap. The server responds with CSS tailored to the specified families, weights, language subsets, or text strings, and the browser then fetches the corresponding font files from fonts.gstatic.com.

Parameters include family for the font collection, display to control font rendering behavior (e.g., swap, block, fallback), text to limit character coverage, and subset to limit scripts. The files are cached by the browser and typically served over HTTPS with HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 for performance.

Because it is a remote resource, requests are third-party and may have privacy implications, and availability depends on network access to Google services. Many sites use this service for broader font coverage without hosting font files themselves, while others host fonts locally as an alternative.
