Hovedtilslutning is a term used in Nordic electrical installations to describe the point where the public electricity network ends and the customer’s private electrical installation begins. It is effectively the service point or service connection between the utility network and the building’s electrical system. The exact location varies, but it is typically found at the boundary of the property or inside a meter cabinet or service panel at the building.

The hovedtilslutning normally includes the supply conductors from the distribution network, the metering equipment, and a main protective device such as a main switch or main fuse. In many installations, the metering device and protective components are housed together in a service enclosure near the point where the utility’s responsibility ends and the customer’s responsibility begins. The earthing and bonding arrangement for the building is also connected in or near this area, following applicable standards.

Responsibilities and safety: The utility company is generally responsible for the electrical network up to and including the hovedtilslutning, including metering and the main protective device. The customer is responsible for the installation beyond this point, including in-building wiring, internal protections, earthing, and safe operation of the consumer installation.
