Hosszúságkontrakció (length contraction) is a phenomenon in special relativity where the length of an object moving at a significant fraction of the speed of light appears shorter to a stationary observer than its length when measured in its own rest frame. This effect is only noticeable at relativistic speeds, meaning speeds close to the speed of light.

The length contraction occurs along the direction of motion. If an object has a proper length L₀ (its length when at rest), an observer moving at a velocity v relative to the object will measure its length as L, where L = L₀√(1 - v²/c²). Here, c is the speed of light. As the velocity v approaches c, the factor √(1 - v²/c²) approaches zero, and thus the measured length L approaches zero. Conversely, if v is much smaller than c, the factor is close to 1, and L is approximately equal to L₀, meaning the contraction is negligible.

It is important to understand that length contraction is a real physical effect, not an optical illusion. It arises from the fundamental postulates of special relativity, namely the constancy of the speed of light for all inertial observers and the principle of relativity. This means that measurements of length, time, and simultaneity are relative to the observer's frame of reference.

The concept of length contraction is closely related to time dilation. Both are consequences of the spacetime structure described by special relativity. While an observer moving with the object measures its proper length and proper time, a stationary observer measures a contracted length and a dilated time interval.
