Hornyítás is a term used in Hungarian biology to describe the process of keratinization that forms horny tissues, such as horns, hooves, and other keratin-rich structures. It refers to the maturation and hardening of keratinocytes in the epidermis, leading to the production and organization of keratin—an intermediate filament protein that gives tissue its rigidity.

In the context of horns, horny tissue forms a prominent, durable structure. True horns found in many bovids consist of a central bone core that is covered by a sheath of keratinized tissue. The horn sheath grows from specialized skin at the horn bud and continues to lengthen throughout the animal’s life. The keratin in horns is highly organized and densely packed, distinguishing it from other keratinized tissues.

Horny tissue encompasses more than horns. Nails, claws, and hooves are also keratinized structures resulting from hornyítás. Rhinoceros horns are a notable exception: they are composed primarily of dense keratin without a true bony core, illustrating that not all “horns” share the same internal anatomy.

The process is influenced by genetics, nutrition, and hormones, and in animal husbandry, management practices may include procedures such as dehorning to reduce injury or improve safety. Distinctions are often drawn between horns (bone core with keratin sheath, typically permanent) and antlers (bone structures shed annually). Understanding hornyítás helps explain how keratinized appendages develop, grow, and function across different species.
