Hooldustsüklini, literally “maintenance cycle” in Estonian, refers to a planned sequence of maintenance actions performed on an asset over time to keep it operating reliably, safely, and efficiently. It is a core component of maintenance management and asset lifecycle planning.

A maintenance cycle is defined by intervals and scope: time-based intervals (for example every six months) or usage-based triggers (such as every 1,000 hours of operation or every 10,000 kilometres). It can also be based on condition monitoring, where tasks are triggered by detected wear or performance changes. Typical tasks within a cycle include lubrication, inspection, cleaning, filter and fluid replacement, calibration, part replacement, safety checks, and documentation of results.

Implementation often uses a maintenance plan or CMMS/EAM system to schedule, record, and track tasks, resources, and parts. The cycle is optimized to balance downtime, labor cost, spare parts, and risk. Data such as historical failure rates, mean time between failures (MTBF), and condition indicators inform adjustments to intervals and task scope, a process known as risk-based or predictive maintenance.

Applications span many sectors, including automobiles, industrial machinery, power generation, rail, and aerospace, where regular service preserves performance and compliance. The concept reflects the etymology from Estonian hooldus (maintenance) and tsükkel (cycle).
