honvédség

Honvédség is the Hungarian term for the national defense force of Hungary. It is the collective term for the Hungarian Armed Forces, which comprise the land forces, air force, and other specialized units. The Honvédség's primary mission is to defend Hungary's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and borders, as well as to contribute to international peace and security operations.

The modern Hungarian Honvédség has its roots in the historical Hungarian Royal Army, established during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Following the dissolution of the empire and the establishment of an independent Hungary, the Honvédség underwent significant transformations throughout the 20th century, including periods under different political regimes and participation in various international alliances.

Currently, the Honvédség is a professional, voluntary military force. It operates under the command of the Ministry of Defence and the Chief of Defence. Hungary is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and the Honvédség actively participates in joint exercises and operations with other NATO member states. The force is committed to interoperability with allied forces and contributes to collective defense efforts. The Honvédség also plays a role in domestic disaster relief and other national security tasks. Its structure and capabilities are regularly updated to meet contemporary security challenges.
