Homloküregek, also known as frontal sinuses, are a pair of air-filled cavities located within the frontal bone of the skull, above the orbits of the eyes. These sinuses are part of the paranasal sinus system, which also includes the maxillary, ethmoid, and sphenoid sinuses. The frontal sinuses are typically absent at birth, developing during childhood and adolescence. They are lined with a mucous membrane that produces mucus, which helps to humidify inhaled air and trap foreign particles. This mucus is then drained into the nasal cavity through small openings called ostia. The size and shape of the frontal sinuses can vary considerably among individuals. They play a role in reducing the weight of the skull, acting as a resonating chamber for the voice, and potentially protecting the brain from facial trauma. Inflammation or infection of the frontal sinuses is known as sinusitis, which can cause symptoms such as facial pain, pressure, and congestion.
