hoitohakku
Hoitohakku, also known as the "Great Fire of 1883," was a significant event in the history of Finland. It occurred on the night of May 21-22, 1883, in the town of Viipuri (now Vyborg, Russia), which was then part of the Grand Duchy of Finland. The fire started in the town's market square and quickly spread due to the dry and windy conditions. The blaze lasted for two days and destroyed approximately 1,200 buildings, including the town hall, the cathedral, and many residential homes. The fire resulted in the deaths of 12 people and left around 10,000 people homeless. The cause of the fire remains unknown, although arson and accidental ignition have been suggested. The Great Fire of 1883 had a profound impact on Viipuri, shaping its urban development and leaving a lasting mark on the town's history. The event is commemorated annually with a memorial service held in the town's cathedral.
