Hjælpeverbet is a grammatical term in Danish referring to auxiliary verbs. These are verbs that accompany a main verb to express a specific grammatical or semantic meaning. They do not carry the main semantic content of the sentence but rather modify the main verb.

The most common hjælpeverben in Danish are 'at have' (to have), 'at være' (to be), and 'at ville' (to want/will). 'At have' is used to form the perfect tenses, such as in 'jeg har spist' (I have eaten). 'At være' is used to form the passive voice, as in 'bogen er skrevet' (the book is written), and also in progressive constructions where they exist. 'At ville' is used to express future tense or intention, for example, 'jeg vil gå' (I will go).

Other verbs can also function as hjælpeverben depending on the context. For instance, 'at kunne' (can/to be able to) and 'at måtte' (may/must) are often considered modal hjælpeverben, indicating ability, permission, or obligation. These verbs precede the infinitive of the main verb, e.g., 'hun kan synge' (she can sing) or 'du må ikke ryge' (you must not smoke).

The use of hjælpeverben is crucial for constructing grammatically correct sentences in Danish, enabling the expression of a wide range of tenses, moods, and voices. They are an integral part of the verb system, working in conjunction with main verbs to convey complete thoughts and meanings.
