Historical Finnish, sometimes stylized as historicalFinnish, refers to the historical stages of the Finnish language, a member of the Finnic branch of the Uralic language family. Its study traces the development from early Finnic speech through Old, Middle, and Early Modern Finnish, up to the modern standard language.

The earliest forms of Finnish emerged from Proto-Finnic spoken in the Baltic region and its vicinity. The first substantial written records appear in the 16th century during the Reformation, when Mikael Agricola produced books and a Bible translation that established a written standard and basic grammatical conventions for Early Modern Finnish. From the 16th to the 18th centuries, Finnish developed under strong Swedish influence; it functioned in liturgy, education in some areas, and increasingly in literature, while Swedish remained dominant in official contexts. Dialectal variation persisted, notably between southwestern and eastern varieties.

The 19th century brought a decisive phase of standardization tied to Finland’s national awakening. The publication of the Kalevala in 1835, compiled by Elias Lönnrot from oral tradition, helped shape a shared literary language and national identity. Language reform efforts and institutions such as the Finnish Literature Society, founded in 1831, promoted a standardized orthography and grammar, solidifying a common written form of Finnish that would evolve into the contemporary standard.

In the 20th century and today, historical Finnish is studied as part of historical linguistics to document phonological, morphological, and syntactic changes that led to modern Finnish. Primary sources include grammars, dictionaries, religious and secular texts, and folklore. The field illuminates contact with Swedish, Russian, and other Finnic languages and explains regional dialectal patterns and the trajectory of standard Finnish.
