hinnsäckarna
Hinnsäckarna, also known as meninges, are the three membranes that enclose the brain and spinal cord. These protective layers are crucial for the central nervous system's function and safety. From outermost to innermost, they are the dura mater, the arachnoid mater, and the pia mater. The dura mater is the tough, fibrous outer layer, providing a strong protective barrier. Beneath it lies the arachnoid mater, a delicate, web-like membrane. Between the arachnoid and pia mater is the subarachnoid space, which is filled with cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid acts as a cushion, absorbing shock and protecting the delicate neural tissues from physical trauma. The innermost layer, the pia mater, is a thin, highly vascular membrane that adheres directly to the surface of the brain and spinal cord, following its every contour. This close contact allows it to supply nutrients and oxygen to the central nervous system. The combined action of the hinnsäckarna and the cerebrospinal fluid provides essential mechanical protection and support for the brain and spinal cord.
