Hiiltyminen is the process by which organic material is transformed into char or carbon-rich residue through heating in limited or absent oxygen. The term comes from the Finnish word hiili (carbon) and the verb hiiltyä, with the gerund hiiltymällä meaning “by carbonization” or “through carbonization.” In Finnish usage, hiiltyminen can refer to both natural and controlled processes that produce charcoal or charred matter.
