hetkkiirust

Hetkkiirust is a term used in Finnish-language physics and education to refer to the instantaneous speed of an object at a specific moment. It denotes how fast the object is moving at that moment, ignoring direction, and is the magnitude of the instantaneous velocity.

Mathematically, if an object's position as a function of time is s(t), then the hetkkiirust at time t is v(t) = ds/dt. Its magnitude |v(t)| equals the instantaneous speed. It differs from average speed, which is defined over a finite interval, and from instantaneous velocity, which includes direction as a vector. If v(t) changes with time, the rate of change is acceleration a(t) = dv/dt.

Measurement and examples: In everyday devices, a car's speedometer displays an approximation of the hetkkiirust at that moment. Radar or laser speed guns measure instantaneous speed.
