Heterosügootseks is a term used in genetics to describe an individual's genetic makeup concerning a particular gene. When an organism is heterozygous for a gene, it means that it possesses two different alleles for that gene. Alleles are different versions of the same gene. For example, if a gene controls eye color, one allele might code for brown eyes, and another allele might code for blue eyes. An individual who is heterozygous for this eye color gene would have one allele for brown eyes and one allele for blue eyes.

In diploid organisms, which have two sets of chromosomes, each chromosome in a pair carries alleles for the same genes. If the two alleles for a specific gene are the same, the individual is said to be homozygous for that gene. If the alleles are different, as in the case of being heterozygous, the expression of the trait can be complex. Often, one allele is dominant, meaning its trait will be expressed even if only one copy is present. The other allele is recessive, and its trait will only be expressed if the individual is homozygous for the recessive allele. The heterozygous state is crucial for understanding inheritance patterns and genetic variation within populations.
