Herännäisyys, often translated as "Awakening," is a prominent Finnish evangelical revival movement within the Lutheran Church. Its origins trace back to the late 18th century with the preaching of Paavo Ruotsalainen, a farmer from Nilsiä. Ruotsalainen emphasized the importance of personal faith, the experience of God's grace, and the need for repentance.

The movement gained momentum in the 19th century, spreading through itinerant preachers and prayer meetings. Key figures like Jonas Lagus and Nilsiä's own Jenny Lehtomäki were instrumental in its growth. Herännäisyys focused on interior spiritual life, the idea of "the Christ within," and the communal experience of faith. This emphasis on personal conviction and heartfelt piety distinguished it from more formal church practices.

Historically, Herännäisyys faced some opposition from established church authorities, but it remained a powerful force in Finnish religious life. Today, it continues to be active, primarily in the northern and central parts of Finland, with numerous prayer groups, summer festivals, and publications. While deeply rooted in Lutheran theology, Herännäisyys maintains a distinct spiritual character, emphasizing inner awakening and a lived experience of faith. Its adherents often engage in practices like confession, prayer, and communal worship.
