Hervadást is a Hungarian term that generally translates to "wilting" or "withering." It describes the process by which a plant loses its turgor pressure, causing its leaves, stems, and other soft tissues to droop and become limp. This physiological response is most commonly observed in plants when they are experiencing a lack of water.

The primary cause of hervadást is dehydration. When a plant cannot absorb water from the soil at a rate sufficient to replace the water lost through transpiration (the evaporation of water from the plant's surface, mainly through stomata), its cells begin to lose turgor. Turgor pressure is the force exerted by the water inside a plant cell against its cell wall, which provides rigidity and support to the plant. As turgor pressure decreases, the plant loses its structural integrity.

While water deficiency is the most frequent trigger for hervadást, other factors can also contribute. Extreme heat, excessive sunlight, or damage to the root system can impair a plant's ability to take up water, leading to wilting. Certain diseases or pest infestations can also disrupt water transport within the plant, resulting in a wilted appearance.

In many cases, hervadást is a temporary condition. If the plant is rehydrated by providing sufficient water, it can recover its turgor and return to a healthy state. However, prolonged or severe wilting can lead to irreversible damage and eventually the death of the plant if the underlying cause is not addressed. Understanding hervadást is crucial for effective plant care and horticulture.
