Henkilötunnus is the Finnish personal identity code. It is a unique identifier assigned to every person registered in the Finnish population information system. The purpose of the henkilötunnus is to facilitate identification and administration in various official contexts, such as healthcare, taxation, and social security.

The henkilötunnus consists of a date of birth followed by a hyphen and a unique four-digit sequence. For men, the day of birth is used directly. For women, 40 is added to the day of birth. For example, if a person was born on January 1, 1990, their date part would be 010190. If the person is female, the day part would become 410190. The four-digit sequence is generated to ensure uniqueness.

The henkilötunnus is considered sensitive personal data and its use is regulated by law. Access to and processing of henkilötunnus data is restricted to authorized individuals and organizations for specific, legitimate purposes. It is important for individuals to protect their henkilötunnus from unauthorized access and disclosure. The Finnish Digital and Population Data Service Agency (Digi- ja väestötietovirasto) is responsible for the administration and issuing of personal identity codes.
