Hengitystieepiteeli (also known as respiratory epithelium) is a type of epithelial tissue that lines the respiratory tract, including the nasal cavity, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. Its primary function is to facilitate the exchange of gases between the environment and the bloodstream, as well as to protect the underlying tissues from irritants and pathogens.

The respiratory epithelium is composed of several types of cells, each with distinct functions. Ciliated cells line the upper respiratory tract and move mucus and trapped particles out of the lungs. Goblet cells secrete mucus, which helps to trap and remove foreign particles. Basal cells are stem cells that divide and differentiate into other types of epithelial cells. Clara cells, found in the bronchioles, secrete surfactant and help to maintain the integrity of the alveolar epithelium.

The respiratory epithelium is constantly exposed to various environmental factors, including irritants, allergens, and pathogens. To protect against these threats, the epithelium produces and releases various defensive molecules, such as cytokines, chemokines, and antimicrobial peptides. Additionally, the epithelium can undergo morphological changes, such as metaplasia, to better withstand environmental stressors.

In cases of respiratory disease, the respiratory epithelium can be damaged or altered, leading to symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Treatment options may include medications to reduce inflammation, antibiotics to treat infections, or surgical interventions to remove damaged tissue. Understanding the structure and function of the respiratory epithelium is crucial for developing effective therapies for respiratory diseases.
