Examples include primary polycythemia vera, a myeloproliferative disorder characterized by an increased production of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Secondary hematokriittiset disorders occur as a response to another underlying condition, such as chronic hypoxia (low oxygen levels), which can stimulate the production of red blood cells. Examples include polycythemia secondary to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or high-altitude living.

The diagnosis of hematokriittiset disorders typically involves a complete blood count (CBC) to measure red blood cell count and hemoglobin levels, as well as other tests to identify the underlying cause. Treatment options depend on the specific disorder and its underlying cause. For primary polycythemia vera, treatments may include phlebotomy (bloodletting) to reduce red blood cell count, or medications such as hydroxyurea or interferon-alpha to suppress red blood cell production. In secondary hematokriittiset disorders, the underlying condition should be treated to resolve the polycythemia. Regular monitoring is essential to manage these conditions effectively and prevent complications such as thrombosis and hypertension.
