Helmholtz is a German surname most often associated with Hermann von Helmholtz (1821–1894), a German physician and physicist whose work integrated physics, physiology, and psychology.

Hermann von Helmholtz made foundational contributions across several fields. In physics and physiology, he helped establish the principle of energy conservation; in sensory physiology he contributed to theories of color vision (the Young–Helmholtz theory) and to the study of hearing and perception; he also invented the ophthalmoscope, enabling examination of the retina.

Several concepts bear his name, notably the Helmholtz equation for wave phenomena, the Helmholtz decomposition of vector fields, and the Helmholtz free energy in thermodynamics.

The name also appears in institutional and scientific contexts, most prominently the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, a major network of research institutions in Germany named in honor of Helmholtz.
