Hawla (Arabic: حول) is a preposition in Arabic that denotes around, about, or approximately. It derives from the triliteral root ح-و-ل (ḥ-w-l), which is associated with turning or surrounding. In Modern Standard Arabic, hawla marks scope and proximity and is used for physical locations (around a place), for figurative topics (around a matter), and for approximate quantities (around ten people). For example, حول المدينة means around the city; حول عشرة أشخاص means about ten people.

In English-language discussions of finance, the term hawala is used for a well-known informal value-transfer system; some transliterations render the Arabic word as hawla. The conventional spelling in English is hawala (also hawala system). The hawala network operates through trusted brokers who arrange transfers by matching debts and settlements across different locations, often without transferring physical money through the same path. It is widely used in parts of the Middle East, South Asia, East Africa, and among diaspora communities, particularly where formal banking is limited or costly.

Regulation and scrutiny vary by jurisdiction. Because hawala operates outside formal financial channels, it is subject to regulatory oversight due to concerns about money laundering and illicit financing, even though many users rely on it for legitimate remittances, humanitarian aid, and rapid cross-border transfers.
