Havssköldpaddor, often referred to as sea turtles, are marine reptiles that belong to the order Testudines. They are characterized by their protective shells and their ability to live in oceans worldwide. There are seven extant species of sea turtles: the green sea turtle, loggerhead sea turtle, Kemp's ridley sea turtle, olive ridley sea turtle, hawksbill sea turtle, flatback sea turtle, and leatherback sea turtle.

These ancient creatures have evolved for millions of years, adapting to life in the sea. Their streamlined bodies and flipper-like limbs are well-suited for swimming. Sea turtles are found in various ocean habitats, from tropical coral reefs to temperate waters, though most species prefer warmer seas. Their diets vary by species, with some being herbivores, others carnivores, and some omnivores. For example, green sea turtles primarily eat seagrass and algae, while loggerheads consume a diet of shellfish and crustaceans.

Reproduction is a significant part of a sea turtle's life cycle. Adult females migrate to nesting beaches, often the same ones where they were born, to lay their eggs. They dig nests in the sand and deposit clutches of leathery-shelled eggs. After a period of incubation, the hatchlings emerge and make a perilous journey to the sea. Many threats face sea turtles, including habitat loss, pollution, entanglement in fishing gear, and direct harvesting. Conservation efforts are underway globally to protect these vulnerable marine animals and their habitats.
