Harántcsíkoltak is the Hungarian term for striated muscles, also known as skeletal muscles. These muscles are responsible for voluntary movement in the body. They are characterized by their striped appearance under a microscope, which is due to the arrangement of contractile proteins, actin and myosin, in repeating units called sarcomeres.

Skeletal muscles are attached to bones by tendons, and when they contract, they pull on the bones, causing movement at the joints. This type of muscle is found throughout the body, including the limbs, trunk, and head. They are essential for activities such as walking, running, lifting, and maintaining posture.

Unlike smooth muscles and cardiac muscles, skeletal muscles are under conscious control. This means that we can decide when to contract them and how strongly. The nervous system sends signals from the brain and spinal cord to the muscle fibers, initiating the contraction process.

The structure of a skeletal muscle is complex, consisting of bundles of muscle fibers. Each muscle fiber is a single muscle cell that contains many nuclei and is filled with myofibrils. Myofibrils are the contractile elements of the muscle cell, and their organization within the sarcomeres creates the characteristic striations.

The energy for muscle contraction comes primarily from ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Skeletal muscles have a rich blood supply to provide oxygen and nutrients and to remove waste products. Muscle fatigue can occur when the muscle is overworked or depleted of energy resources.
