Harmaasävykuva, often translated as grayscale image or black-and-white image, is a type of digital image where each pixel has a single value representing its intensity. This intensity value is typically mapped to a range of grays, from pure black to pure white. Unlike color images which use multiple channels (commonly red, green, and blue) to represent color, grayscale images simplify visual information by focusing solely on luminance.

The conversion of a color image to grayscale involves calculating a weighted average of the color channels. Common formulas exist for this conversion, such as the luminosity method, which assigns different weights to red, green, and blue based on their perceived brightness by the human eye. The resulting grayscale image can be represented by a single channel, where pixel values range from 0 (black) to 255 (white) in an 8-bit system, or other ranges depending on the bit depth.

Grayscale images have various applications. They are fundamental in fields like medical imaging, where details of structure and density are often more critical than color. They are also used in printing, security systems, and as an artistic choice to emphasize form, texture, and contrast. Furthermore, many image processing algorithms are simpler and more computationally efficient when applied to grayscale images. The absence of color can sometimes reduce visual clutter, allowing viewers to focus on the subject matter itself.
