Hanghullámot is the Hungarian word for sound wave. A sound wave is a vibration that propagates as an acoustic wave, through a transmission medium such as a gas, liquid, or solid. In humans and other animals, hearing is the process by which sound waves are converted into nerve impulses, and the sense of sound is mediated by the auditory system.

Sound waves are characterized by several properties, including frequency, amplitude, and speed. Frequency refers to the number of cycles per second, measured in Hertz (Hz), and determines the pitch of a sound. Amplitude relates to the intensity or loudness of the sound, often measured in decibels (dB). The speed of sound depends on the medium through which it travels, being faster in solids than in liquids, and faster in liquids than in gases.

The generation of sound waves typically involves a source that vibrates, causing disturbances in the surrounding medium. These disturbances travel outwards as longitudinal waves, meaning that the particles of the medium oscillate parallel to the direction of wave propagation. When these waves reach an observer's ear, they cause the eardrum to vibrate, which is then transmitted through the middle and inner ear to the brain, where it is interpreted as sound. The study of sound waves is called acoustics.
